Carnaval is celebrated 40 days before Easter.
So for example, over the next few years you can expect it will begin:
2017 - Feb 26th
2018 - Feb 11th
2019 - March 3rd
2020 - Feb 23rd
2021 - Feb 14th
Carnaval parades at Sambadrome happen over the course of 5 days, and then one final day after that to determine the champion Samba school.
There are different 'grades'/'tiers' or 'leagues' of Samba Schools which will perform on different days.
During the first two days, you will see the second league schools perform.
On third and fourth day, the first league schools will perform. As such, there is more choreography, energy, elaborate costumes and spectacular floats on these days. I definitely noticed the difference between the second and first leagues schools.
On the fifth day, the children's samba schools will perform.
On the last day, almost a week later, the six best first league Samba schools will perform to determine who will be champion Samba school.
